How To Avoid The Top Five First Year Home Business Mistakes.
Even once you've gotten past the start-up phase for your home business, there are still plenty of mistakes to be made, and many of them are likely to be made in your first year, when they can be the most damaging.
Here are the top five home business mistakes to avoid.
Waiting for Customers to Come to You. Too many new entrepreneurs wait for their customers to phone, come to the door, or whatever. They get one or two customers by shear luck, but not nearly enough to even begin paying their costs.
These people tend to sit around, watching their competitors doing lots of business, and wonder what they're doing wrong.
Avoid taking this stance. It is of primary importance that you get out there and actively try to find customers.
Talk to people, call them, meet with them -- whatever you do, don't just sit there!
Marketing your home business is and always should be your number one priority.
Spending Too Much on Advertising.
So everyone tells you that the only way to get ahead in business is to advertise.
In many ways that's true, but you need to make sure that you stick to inexpensive advertising methods especially when you're starting out.
Spending hundreds of dollars for an ad in the local newspaper might turn out to get you very few new customers, and you could have spent your entire advertising budget on it.
Make your money go further with leaflets, direct mail or email. These are more easily targetable campaign methods with generallyhigher response rates and lower costs.
Remember that it is always better to spend money on an offer rather than on an ad, and always better to spend money on an ad rather than on a delivery method.
Being Too Nice.
When you're running your own home business, it can be tempting to try to be everyone's friend, giving discounts at the drop of a hat and making sure that you don't hassle or convenience anyone.
That's all well and good, until you find that your Good Samaritan act has just cut your profit in half without lowering the cost to obtain the customer very much at all.
Sometimes, you need to realise that you need to be more assertive to make a profit.
It's one thing to give people discounts to encourage them to buy or to come back, and quite another if you do it just because you like them or feel sorry for them.
Don't be afraid to be assertive in your pursuit of home business success.
Nice guys don't finish last, but they are running in a different race, one with much less prize money. If that doesn't botheryou, then of course, feel free to go for it.
Being Afraid To Use The Phone.
You'd be surprised just how common phone fears actually are -- if you're scared of using the phone, you're not alone by any means.
A lot of people are terrified of making phone calls, and go out of their way to avoid them wherever possible.
You need to try your best to overcome your fears, because talking to customers or potential clients on the phone is the next best thing to meeting them them in person.
Letters and emails are much less effective by comparison.
The best way to overcome phone fears varies from person to person, but it can often be as simple as making the phone fun, by calling friends and relatives often for a while and getting used to it.
Alternatively, try working in telemarketing for a while,if that doesn't make normal phone use look like a walk in the park by comparison, then nothing will.
Hiring Professionals for Everything.
It can be tempting to think, that since you're starting a home business, you should just find a company or person to do most everything you need.
This is where forming alliances with other entrepreneurs can be especially advantageous.
These alliances can provide you with a wide array of "connections" to get numerous things done easier and can often be accomplished with a barter arrangement between you and your other alliance member(s).
If all else fails, consider digging in and doing it yourself.
Although this can initially be extremely time consuming, you may just learn a new skill that can be leveraged to good advantage in a future barter opportunity.
As an example, new home business owners tend to overspend on web design services.
They seem to think that having fancy graphics all over their website(s) is crucial to their home business success.
But do they really increase sales?
Often the use of graphics can cloud your real message and end up detracting from the sales process rather than helping it.
Just like a fancy brochure often just communicates to your potential customer that you're going to have to charge thema premium rate just so you can pay for your expensive brochures.
An excellent rule to follow is: Don't hire someone unless you can demonstrate that the service they're going to provide will increase your profits by more than the amount you're spending, if you're not sure, try doing it yourself first, and you can always upgrade it later.
