Basic Home Business System.....Tips To Simplify Your Life
Not having a home business system is a key reason why so many tend to fail within their first year of operation. They lack the proper systems to help insure their success. Building and implementing your business systems should be one of the first considerations when starting your home business.
Understanding that even though putting your business systems in place will require a little extra time as well as a lot of cooperation from all your family members, taking this time during the planning and start-up phases of your business will more than pay off with saved time later on by preventing and protecting against potential accidents, miscommunications and errors.
Your Business Office Space
You can't realistically expect to run a successful home business if you don’t have a well organized and efficient workplace where you can isolate or at least periodically insulate yourself from the everyday family incidents and activities that can seriously distract and dramatically hinder your work time effectiveness.
In short, trying to run a successful home business from your kitchen table probably isn't the best thing to try.
Get The Whole Family On The Same Page
Additional things to consider if you have young children is how important it is that they will not have an opportunity to tamper with your equipment, records or projects. The likelihood that your office systems will ever survive if your kids have open access to everything that you are working on is virtually slim to none.
This may sound like I have something against kids, I truly don't, but the simple facts are that kids are generally very curious and they like to experiment, so unless you're willing to risk having important files erased, or worse, it would be best to find a secure place to work at home.
Again, just one seemingly minor and avoidable mishap could easily take you several hours or more to correct.
Get A Dedicated Business Phone
Another concern if you want to get your home business system up and running smoothly would be a business dedicated telephone. Having teenagers in the house would mean you could pretty much forget about using the house phone for your business.
Realistically, it’s just not going to work. So get your own line or possibly even a cell phone that is for business use only to resolve any potential phone conflicts.
If a separate cell phone isn't practical for your situation then be sure that everyone in the house understands that your office phone is yours alone and it is meant strictly for business.
It may even be necessary to clarify that nobody is allowed to touch your business phone unless it is an absolute emergency. To get your point across, it is recommended that you simply put your phone in your office and attach an answering machine to it.
That way when you're not available, the answering machine automatically takes the call rather than just whoever happens to be home. This is a simple but very effective way to help preserve the professional integrity of your home business. A key point when you’re doing business from home.
The Next Step....Getting A Lockable File Cabinet
Now that you have a working space and a telephone line, get yourself a good filing cabinet preferably with a good lock. To insure that your home business system will be relatively secure. All your files, especially important files should go into the filing cabinet and not be lying out in the open.
The last thing you want is for someone to accidentally spill something on them and ruin all your hard work. So it's always best to keep them stashed in a lockable filing cabinet.
One Easy Step For A More Secure Computer
Now for your computer, I recommend you put an extremely difficult to crack password on it. You will never know who might be tempted to play games on your computer and once again your entire home business system would needlessly be at risk. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
So it is strongly advisable to take this simple added step to help make your systems as safe as possible.
Separate Checking Accounts
Your home business system would not be complete if you don't have a financial management system.
If you are handling the family finances, never mingle your household money and your home business money in one bank account. Open a separate bank account for your business and keep records of the expenses separately.
You just won’t be able to easily track your business expenses if you mingle your business and personal monies. So to make it easier on yourself, always keep separate accounts.
The headaches and time you'll save yourself when doing your monthly accounting and especially at tax time will prove extremely well worth it.
