An Honest Overview Of The Benefits And Challenges Of Work At Home.
For some people, the idea of starting to work at home is exciting: There’s that unprecedented freedom in choosing your own pace and timings, and the allure of working for yourself.
For others, to work at home is fraught with problems; it’s almost impossible to separate the responsibilities of being with your family and working, and worst of all, it’s easy to get caught up too much in work and lose out on living your life.
To help you make an informed decision, here are both sides of the story:
Benefits
One of the biggest advantages of being able to work at home is the flexibility and freedom you get.
Work can take up a lot of our lives, and a 9 to 5 job can totally exhaust you (even if you’re taking small breaks in the office throughout the day).
For most of us, we’re able to work much better on our own terms: that is, work when you want to, take a break when you wish.
While there are still deadlines to meet (and in this case you’re more responsible because the company’s bottom line depends on how well you meet those deadlines), working at home allows you to adjust your schedule so that you’re able to work, be with your family and have a good time all at the same time.
Another important aspect of working from home is the low startup costs you incur.
Instead of paying the rent of an office and the wages for a staff, you can base (or at least start off) your small business at home and avoid spending big money until your business is successful enough to pay for its own expansion.
There are also incredible tax benefits for home business owners so if you want to work at home, be sure to check the current tax laws in your area.
Challenges
For some, the freedom is the problem. The lack of structure in our lives stemming from the absence of ‘going to work’ can lead us to take work too lightly, or to even mismanage deadlines altogether.
Since you’re solely responsible for the business, you’ll have to be self-disciplined enough to ensure that your business performs at the level you set out to achieve.
There’s no one to keep you in line; you’ll have to check yourself every time you catch yourself avoiding work at home.
Also, there’s the prospect of increased isolation from the world. We tend to take socializing at work for granted.
Sometimes when you take the people at work out of your lives you might suddenly feel isolated and alone.
This is the biggest challenge for some people, and if this bothers you, maybe you should start something that’s more service-oriented and allows you much more interaction with other people.
The other great challenge to working from home is to separate your time between work, the family and yourself.
Family members, especially young children, may have a hard time adjusting to the concept that you have to work at home.
To prevent this from becoming a crippling issue, take care to communicate your objectives to the whole family.
It helps to set aside some ‘work time’ and some ‘family time’ into your schedule. However, keep it flexible, and allow for unexpected obligations.
In the end, it’s about what you and your family are most comfortable with.
As long as you chart the territory and plan for as many issues as possible, before they arise, you should be able to work at home quite easily.
